When I was first moving to Brooklyn eleven years ago, my roommates and I had a real estate agent show us around. We weren’t too familiar with the ins and outs of all the neighborhoods, but we knew we wanted to live in Williamsburg.
After a few days of searching, our agent brought us to a beautiful, newly built top floor three bedroom apartment. The apartment had two full bathrooms, a large outdoor private patio, and was in a small elevator building with laundry in the basement. The apartment was amazing. We really wanted it.
But I remember being a little unsure about the location. It was in Williamsburg, but in a part of the neighborhood I wasn’t too familiar with, at Meserole Street and Lorimer Street, a few blocks north from the Lorimer JMZ train station. I hadn’t even heard of the JMZ train before. Only the L train. We had friends living in Williamsburg already on the north, more well-known side, right off the Bedford avenue L stop.
Yes, south of the BQE (i-278), over here, is still Williamsburg. This was the address of our old apartment.
Still, the apartment was too good to pass up. We signed the lease a few days after viewing it.
When people think of Williamsburg, they think of North Williamsburg near the waterfront. They think of Bedford avenue.
If you’re considering buying, renting, or investing in the area where I lived – what my roommates and I used to call “Southeast Williamsburg,” but you’re unsure of it, fear not: this area of Williamsburg, near the Montrose L stop, the fifth in Brooklyn, is just as great as the Northside.
It may not be as busy with foot traffic as Bedford avenue, but because of that, it’s quieter, and therefore a bit more relaxed. And there’s just as much great commerce. Winson at Graham avenue and Montrose avenue is a great restaurant and has a bakery across the street. My old roommates and I used to go to Dunwell Donuts, right on top of the Montrose L train stop, at least once a week.
If you’re a landlord, the rental prices – and therefore sales prices – are nearly as strong as they are near Bedford avenue. Back in 2013, we rented our apartment on Meserole Street for $4300. According to StreetEasy, that specific apartment hasn’t come up for rent in a while, but I think it could rent for about $5500 now – at least.
If you need real estate help in this area, keep me in mind.
